Activities
River and creek temperatures throughout the summer months are delightful for swimming (unlike the frigid waters of the main fork of the Trinity River), since these waters are not dammed. Upstream of the house, less than a mile away, the South Fork of the Trinity River flows through Shasta-Trinity National Forest, and features particularly beautiful swimming holes amidst large granite boulders and conifers (large photo at bottom). As you explore this area of the river you are more likely to meet a deer than another person. About five miles downstream along South Fork Road are two National Forest campsites (small photo at left) that are almost always completely empty, both of which have huge beautiful pools for swimming or leisurely rafting.
Kayakers and rafters alike will be thrilled by the Trinity River’s superb whitewater. Trips of all levels, from serene Class I and II floats to heart-pounding world-class V rapids are enjoyed on the Trinity River. A raft or inflatable kayak rental on the many miles of Class II water is perfect for those who seek to explore the river on their own. Check out Trinity River Rafting, offering guided whitewater rafting trips on the Trinity, just 30 miles from River Rock Retreat.
Hikers will find this area to be a delight. There are great views, abundant wildlife, and almost no people. Miles of hiking and equestrian trails allow you to explore the river canyon and surrounding mountains. View the USGS topographic map of the area.
Trinity County offers world-class steelhead and salmon fishing. See information
on local fishing regulations, including local fishing information for Hayfork Creek and Trinity River South
Fork, as well as links the most recent Sport Fishing Regulations of the California Fish and Game
Commission.
Those interested in astronomy will find nearly unobstructed horizons, warm clear summer nights, and a limiting magnitude better than 6. It's a great place for observing-the only disturbance might be the sound of deer eating our fruit trees or the occasional scream of a little red fox! View current viewing conditions.
